On the occasion of the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council, the Baloch Human Rights Council (BHRC) submitted to the office of the Secretary-General three separate written statements, focusing on various aspects of human rights violations committed by Pakistani authorities in Balochistan.
In the written statements on items 3, 4, and 6 of the general debate, it was observed that since 2002, the Pakistani state has committed massacres and extrajudicial killings in Balochistan as a policy matter. With the help of their auxiliary militias, death squads and religious outfits, military and civil intelligence agencies are involved in forced disappearances, illegal detentions of Baloch intellectuals, and social and political activists in thousands. Dumping the victims’ bodies after enforced disappearances with visible marks of inhuman torture has become a routine matter in Balochistan.
The statements also highlighted that, on different occasions, the police have resorted to a violent crackdown on Baloch families demanding answers to the whereabouts of their loved ones. Additionally, it was observed that press freedom in Balochistan has gone from bad to worse recently.
The UN Secretary-General was requested that:
- The UNHRC should call upon the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to stop such actions and fulfil its international obligations.
- The UN should establish a fact-finding mission to investigate the extrajudicial killings and mass disappearances of the Baloch political and social activists.
